Construction workers have demanded Rs.700 per day for male and Rs.500 per day for female workers as wages.
They have also called upon the Central government to rein in the rising price of construction material.
Meeting under the aegis of the Construction Workers Federation of India, affiliated to the CITU, here on Sunday the construction workers claimed that the exorbitant rise in the price of construction material has affected both consumers and construction workers as many a construction activity has suffered.
A resolution adopted at the meet pointed out that even the beneficiaries under the Indira Awas Yojana and Chief Minister Special Green House Project were refraining from taking up or proceeding with the construction activity due to the skyrocketing cost of construction materials. Another resolution urged the State government to ensure that sand was sold in the government stipulated price and not arbitrarily according to the whims and fancies of some coterie.
Similarly, the federation called upon the State government to increase the quantum of cement supplied through the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation to individual consumers and also wanted expeditious supply to avoid delay in sanction and disbursal of cement bags.
Claiming that the construction industry workers were getting work only for 200 days in a year, the federation wanted the minimum wage fixed for male workers at Rs.700 a day for male workers and Rs.500 per day for female workers.
The meet also urged the State government to ensure proper functioning of the welfare boards and extend aid for educational pursuits of the wards of construction industry workers, increased marriage assistance, and accidental insurance cover of Rs.2 lakh and grant of Rs.1lakh in case of natural death of construction workers.
Besides they also wanted the governments to grant a pension of Rs.2,000 per month.
Construction Workers Federation of India district president Khader Batcha presided over the meet in which the State general secretary Singaravelu, vice-president D.Kumar, CITU district secretary G.Jeevanandam, and CWFI district secretary C.Murugesan participated.
