Former workers of cooperative mill held

Ten former workers of the closed Salem Cooperative Spinning Mill in Ammapet were arrested when they attempted to prevent the sale of machinery from the company premises here on Wednesday.

As many as 252 employees were working in the mill that was closed permanently in 2004. Workers staged various protest demanding re-opening of the mill and settlement of arrears and finally filed a case in the court. Recently, tenders were floated for selling the machines in the mill and a private company was awarded the tender.

On Wednesday, workers of the private company came to the mill and were trying to take the machines. As the news spread, 10 formers workers picketed the mill demanding that their arrears be settled first. When a case is pending in the court, officials had violated the rules and floated tender and issued orders.
