Former Director-General of Police S. Sripal died here on Tuesday following a cardiac arrest.

He was 76. He is survived by wife Kamalie Sripal, son Shreyas Sripal and two daughters Supriya Sripal and Hema Sripal.

Belonging to the 1962 batch of the Indian Police Service, Mr. Sripal served as Chennai City Police Commissioner during 1980–85 and became the Director-General of Police, Tamil Nadu, in 1991 and held the post till 1995. He retired as DGP in April 1996.

Hailing from Tiruvannamalai, Mr. Sripal became the chairman of the Research Foundation for Jainology. He served in the State Planning Commission and as a visiting Professor at Madras University. As Chairman of the Research Foundation for Jainology, Mr. Sripal contributed to the propagation and study of Jainism.

He was instrumental in creating a full-fledged Department of Jainology in Madras University.
