With the AIADMK coming to power, Tiruchi should get back its focus on development in all fronts. The five MLAs of the ruling party should strive hard to take up the city’s growth. Clogged water bodies must be cleared to ensure free flow of water during rainy days. Water harvesting methods need to be reactivated. More check dams need to be constructed. The one constructed in Kambarasampettai two years ago is a great boon. If age-old water bodies such as streams, ponds and lakes are rejuvenated it will help farmers to overcome water crisis and the common man need not suffer from drinking water shortage.

Poor renovation

After a hue and cry over inordinate delay in repair of the Cauvery bridge, the work was completed. However it was not renovated to the full satisfaction of the public. The joints at several points are broken and protruding iron rods pose a grave threat to all sorts of vehicles. Barrels are placed presently at the areas where the joints have broken, which is not ideal. With heavy vehicles like tipper lorries and cargo vehicles freely utilising the bridge, the condition of the bridge may worsen. People expect the officials concerned to repair it and set right the flaws.

“Ensure free movement of vehicles”

Barricades have been placed on both sides to slow down the fast moving vehicles near the SIT bus top on the Tiruchi-Thanjavur highway. The barricades affect the visibility of motorists coming from east and taking a ‘U’ turn to enter the college and Ariyamangalam. Traffic policemen are not posted at this spot. The authorities should look into the matter and post traffic policemen at this bus stop during peak hours for smooth movement of pedestrians and vehicles.

“Complete service road work ”

Though the ROB at Crawford was thrown open to public in February 2014, it does not have proper sign boards and necessary service roads. In the western side of the ROB, the under pass and the service road work is yet to be completed on both E. Pudur and Crawford sides. The sub way built in the western side has become mosquito breeding centre as water is stagnant here for months together. The incomplete service road has become unfit for motoring. Motorists use the service road in the eastern side resulting in frequent accidents opposite to Crawford Mosque. On the E.Pudur side, the road is in very bad shape with pits and pot holes. Will the district administration take the stock of the situation and take steps to complete the service road work at Crawford?

Unhygienic condition

People habitually urinate in public in Rettaimal Street, which leads to Chinnakadai Street and N.S.B Road.. The stench and unhygienic conditions cause much revulsion. The Corporation should take steps to put an end to this.

Aravind K. Rao,

“Restore order”

The Srirangam Temple and Corporation authorities should make Sannidhi Street from the Rajagopuram to the temple litter-free. Vendors should be cleared. There are many shops outside Sannidhi Street and the walking space should be freed. There is traffic chaos outside the Raghavendra arch and EVS Street entrance in Ranga nagar where No. 1 buses terminate. We hope the new state government will restore public order.

Time management

Two days back I approached a private school to get transfer certificate for my ward studying there. It was my third attempt and was forced to wait for more than three and half hours to get the certificate. Many other parents had the same experience. It is the duty of the management of schools to issue TC on receipt of request from parents irrespective of the reason. The fee of Rs. 500 for issuing TC was high and the delay in issuing it was not acceptable. The educational institution which has to teach values of time management to younger generation wasted the time of parents. If the parents are employed, they have to take leave. If they are daily wage earners they stand to forego their wages. I request the managements to do the needful quickly in future.

Bus service inadequate

The western part of Puthanampatti is linked with Thuraiyur register office but other side of the village comes under the registration office in Chettikulam in Perambalur district. There is no direct bus service from Puthanampatti to Chettikulam and it is tough for the public to reach the register office. People have to board two buses. I request the authorities to solve this problem.

Bad road

State Highway 30 connects Musiri with Attur via Thuraiyur. The road starting from Thuraiyur Pirivu Road is in bad condition for a length of about 20 metres. Motorists especially two wheeler riders face much difficulty due to pits and gravel erosion. I request the Highways Department to improve the road condition.

“Create cancer awareness”

A major chunk of the cancer cases is related to tobacco consumption. The national programme launched by the government for prevention and control of cancers is a laudable attempt. A sensible approach to tackle the cancer burden is the need of the hour. TVs should spare some time to tell the people not to use tobacco in any form.

“Provide space for the library building”

The Swamimalai branch library is functioning from a private building on East Car Street. As the building is in very old condition, the owner has requested the library authorities to vacate. The library authorities have been searching for a building during the past three months. As no private owner is willing to provide rental building, the library administration feels hard to get its shelter. The district administration should direct the local body and the HR and CE Department to provide space for the library building.

Sand accumulation

on roads

Maintenance of roads leaves much to be desired. Even simple steps to patch up pot holes or removal of sand accumulation is not being done by the corporation. I skid and fell down due to sand accumulation on the road and suffered a fracture in hand. Many major roads in Thanjavur have accumulated sand on road sides leading to accidents. Will the authorities take appropriate action to prevent such accidents?

R. Venkateswaran,

Thanjavur.
