River Noyyal is in spate in Karur district after devastating neighbouring Tirupur district on Monday. Authorities have warned the people living along the banks of the river of the impending threat.
Sudden flash floods in River Noyyal, a polluted river that had hardly seen heavy flow of water in the past several years, are threatening several villages along the banks of the river in Karur district. As of 8 p.m. on Monday, Public Works Department officials said that around 5,3900 cusecs are being realized at Kombupalayam just upstream of the confluence of the river with River Cauvery in Karur district.
PWD authorities aver that the flow might increase during Monday night and subside later on. But the threat of floods would loom large and the authorities were leaving nothing to chance. Revenue, Fire and Rescue Services as also police are bracing themselves to meet emergent situations.
In fact River Cauvery itself is carrying a lot of water as an estimated 11,700 cusecs is hurtling down the river as realized at Jedarpalayam Bed Regulator. The other major river in the district River Amaravathy is carrying 1,150 cusecs as of Monday.
