Fish breeding season commences

The State Fisheries Department commenced the fresh fish breeding season in Mettur Dam by releasing about 2.4 lakh fish fingerlings in the water spread area of the dam on Wednesday.

S. Semmalai, MLA, released the fish fingerlings in the presence of M. Karthikeyan, Deputy Director of Fisheries, Dharmapuri, and C. Subramani, Assistant Director of Fisheries.

Lalitha Saravanan, Mettur Municipal Chairperson, and M. Kathiresan, Inspector of Fisheries, were also present.

According to Fisheries Department sources, the onset of southwest monsoon is usually the breeding season for fish in Mettur Dam. The ‘catla’ and ‘rohu’ fish fingerlings varieties, nurtured at the Government Fish Seed Farm at Mettur, were released in Masipalayam water spread area.

The fish seed stocking will be continued in the Mettur Dam in a phased manner throughout the year, the sources added.

The last fish breeding season came to an end on June 30, when the department released a record 46 lakh fish fingerlings in the water spread area of the dam for the benefit of the local fishermen during the whole year.
