Financial aid given to sexual assault victims

Complying with the Madras High Court order, the district administration disbursed financial assistance of Rs. 3 lakh each to the Rajasthani victims, sexually abused by a police constable, here at the Collectorate on Wednesday.

The case pertained to the sexual abuse of two women and two children, from Rajasthani community here in September. All India Democratic Women’s Association (Aidwa) had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking relief for the children and justice for the victims. As an interim relief, the Madras High Court had ordered a compensation of Rs. 3 lakh each and also ordered for removal of the accused policeman from service. The financial relief was disbursed to the four victims, including two children, by Collector T.P. Rajesh in the presence of Aidwa general secretary U. Vasuki here.

Earlier, Ms. Vasuki led a demonstration at Denkanikottai demanding CBI probe into the gang-rape of physically challenged girl in Kodagarai village and also a financial relief of Rs. 10 lakh for the victim.

Speaking to The Hindu , Ms. Vasuki said the victim’s family had faced “midnight knocks” by the police who had also extracted signatures on blank papers. According to Ms. Vasuki, action under Section 166 should also be initiated against the erring medical officers and police officials.
