Ex-convict held for old couple's murder

Police on Monday arrested an ex-convict in the Chengalpattu double murder case and remanded him to judicial custody on Tuesday.

Disclosing this to reporters at Chengalpattu, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Kancheepuram Range, M.Ramasubramani said the accused, Karthi (25) of Sadras, was arrested within 10 hours of the filing of first information report by the Chengalpattu Town Police.

Special police parties, formed to detect the case, collected the list of suspected criminals and the cases in which they were involved and convicted. Karti was convicted in a chain snatching case on June 9, 2008 and awarded two years imprisonment. He was also convicted in two wire theft cases, a motorcycle lifting case in Tiruporur and in an attempt to escape from police custody in Chengalpattu.

On Sunday night, Karti had consumed liquor and roamed the town with the intention to commit an offence when he noticed Paramanandham coming out of his house around 4 a.m. He attacked him with a log and entered the house and killed Paramanandham's wife Saroja before leaving with six sovereigns of gold jewellery, two mobile phones and Rs.1,000 in cash.
