The CB-CID has been entrusted with the probe into the examination malpractice by IPS probationer Safeer Karim and abetment of his accomplices including his wife.

Two days ago, Director General of Police T.K.Rajendran issued orders transferring the investigation from the city police to the CB-CID since the case has wider interstate ramifications, said a senior police officer in CB-CID adding that the case was formally handed over to them on Wednesday. Karim, who hails from Kerala, was allotted the Tamil Nadu cadre after he cleared the UPSC exams for the first time. In an attempt to join his home cadre, Karim appeared for the UPSC examinations held this year again.

His wife Joicy Joy was a visiting faculty at an IAS coaching centre at Hyderabad. He would send pictures of the question paper by WhatsApp to his wife, and she would help him with the answers over phone. Police arrested Karim on October 28 following a tip-off from the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

A mobile phone, a bluetooth device, and wireless earplug speakers were seized from Karim, barely minutes before he was to begin writing the Civil Services mains exam conducted by the (UPSC) in Presidency Girls' Higher Secondary School, Egmore.

On the next day, his wife and the coaching centre head Rambabu were arrested.
