Erode Corporation keenly pursuing satellite bus stand projects

September 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - ERODE:

The City Corporation is looking forward to establishing satellite bus stands at Solar and Suriyampalayam to reduce traffic congestion in the city limits at the earliest.

The civic body has written to the Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited seeking appointment of a consultant for designing the bus stands. Based on the consultant’s report, which will be more or less considered a Detailed Project Report, further push will be given to the projects.

The proposal for the two outer bus stands was made in the Comprehensive Mobility Plan for the city. The bus stands would be established on lines of Arapalayam and Palanganatham bus stands in Madurai, Corporation Commissioner R. Mohan said. According to official sources, the Corporation Bus Stand in Erode city caters to over 1,000 services every day. According to a traffic survey, operating the outer bus stands for mofussil buses would considerably reduce traffic congestion in the city limits.

Once the bus stands are in place, only city buses would be operated between bus stands. The two bus stands are imperative needs for Erode. But, while no time frame has been fixed, the projects would be pursued in right earnest, Corporation sources said. There is no plan for establishing a similar bus stand along the Sathy road, the sources said. In recent years, residents of localities

surrounding Ganirowtherkulam tank have been raising apprehensions that the civic body was keen on converting a portion of the water body into a bus stand.

The projects would be confined to the two locations where bus stands have been advocated as per the Comprehensive Mobility Plan, Corporation sources added.
