The number of students admitted to government schools in Tamil Nadu has increased by more than one lakh in the current academic year, when compared to the preceding year, according to School Education Director V.C. Rameswaramurugan.
This has been made possible due to a range of new initiatives including introduction of English medium sections in government schools, a measure well-received both in urban and rural areas, he told The Hindu here on Wednesday, on the sidelines of a meeting of Government School Headmasters.
While 16 lakh fresh enrolments were made in Government schools in classes I, VI and IX last year, a little over 17 lakh students were admitted this year.
Parents residing in urban areas need no longer depend on expensive private schools for providing English medium education to their children, he added.
The educational assistance given to Government school students, such as number of free uniforms, has been increased recently. “The focus now is on improving the quality of teaching with all government schools instructed to achieve cent per cent pass percentage in Class X and Plus-Two board examinations and also aim for State ranks,” the School Education Director said.
