The State, which had experienced unscheduled load-shedding in many parts late last week, recorded an all-time high consumption of around 271 million units (MU) on Monday, thanks to substantial improvement in the supply position.
The previous high was 269.65 MU, which was registered on October 1 last year. The basic difference between the previous instance and the present one was the availability of wind power in October. Then, wind mills accounted for 34 MU whereas now it contributed three MU. Yet, what made it possible for the State to record the all-time high energy consumption now was the production by almost all new thermal power units, which provided around 2,100 MW, according to an official.
In a few days, an additional unit of 600 MW at the Mettur Thermal Power Station will resume production.
On Monday evening (7-05 p.m.), the maximum peak demand met was 12,237 MW, of which the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation’s power plants accounted for 4,730 MW; Central Generating Stations – 3,715 MW; captive power plants – 1,237 MW; independent power plants – 1,091 MW; power purchase from other sources – 835 and non-conventional energy sources including wind power – 595 MW.
The supply from the eastern region was 34 MW.
