April 11, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - CUDDALORE:

Niti Pandey, who is appointed by the Election Commission as Observer, arrived here on Saturday to take stock of the campaigns conducted across Cuddalore district.

A release said Ms. Pandey asked the officials to identify polling stations in all the nine Assembly constituencies which had recorded low voter turnout during the 2014 elections and conduct special campaigns in these to improve the percentage.

He visited polling booths in Cuddalore, Nellikuppam, Panruti, Pennadam and Thittakudi. The observer also reviewed the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign in the district.

Collector S. Suresh Kumar said around 92 cases have been registered so far for violation of the Model Code. The Election department has removed 12,401 posters, banners and flex boards in different constituencies in the district.

The department has also intensified the SVEEP initiatives at polling stations that had low turnout in the previous polls in order to encourage people to caste their votes, Mr. Kumar said.
