The highly decomposed carcass of an adult dolphin was found washed ashore at Seeniappa Dargah in Kilakkarai off Gulf of Mannar region on Tuesday.

Forest Ranger S. Ganesalingam said that the marine mammal should have died at least five days ago.

Weighed 140 kg

It was a male adult, aged about 10 to 12 years, and it weighed about 140 kg. It was 2.4 metres long with a circumference of 108 cm, he said.

Forest watchers sighted the carcass in the sea in the morning and it was washed ashore around noon.

It was buried at the shore after a veterinary surgeon from Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) conducted the post-mortem, he said.
