A remark by Finance Minister D. Jayakumar had the Opposition on its feet for a few minutes in the Assembly on Wednesday.
During his speech, DMK MLA Thayagam Kavi said that during the DMK regime the government had not increased the price of bus tickets, electricity, milk and other products but under the AIADMK rule, all these were hiked.
Intervening, Mr. Jayakumar quoted a remark made during the DMK regime by the then chief minister M. Karunanidhi when the milk producers had threatened to pour milk as a mark of protest against the government for not increasing procurement prices.
The DMK MLAs protested and asked the Speaker to expunge his remarks. Following the melee that continued for sometime, the Finance Minister said he would correct his earlier remark.
Mr. Karunanidhi had said then that ‘we have seen flood of blood and so we won’t be afraid of a flood of milk,’ Mr. Jayakumar said to which the DMK MLAs protested again.
But the Finance Minister refused to budge and said, “This statement was made by your leader and it is there in the Assembly records. I will take responsibility for this,” he said.
