The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Thursday criticised Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for demanding the resignation of Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran over charges that he had obtained benefit in the grant of telecom licences to a private company when he was Communications Minister.
In a statement here, DMK leaders Pon Muthuramalingam and K. S. Radhakrishnan said that Ms. Jayalalithaa should have borne in mind the legal proceedings that she herself was facing before demanding Mr. Maran's resignation.
“Even now, she is facing trial in a Bangalore court in a ‘disproportionate assets' case. Is she facing this case after quitting office?” they asked.
“It is unwise on her part to make remarks without taking into account the corruption cases pending against her.” Communist Party of India's State secretary D. Pandian said in a statement that the Prime Minister should seek Mr. Maran's resignation to facilitate impartial investigation into the charges against him.
Mr. Pandian said that it was condemnable that the Union government had not only failed to take any action on allegations against Mr. Maran, but was also trying to cover up the issue.
