Condemning the poor sanitation prevailing in the Corporation limits, DMK councillors came to the council meeting in an ambulance here on Monday.

The ambulance carried the picture of Zaheer Hussain (47), teacher of Maruti Nagar, who died due to H1N1 influenza flu on November 21 at a private hospital in Coimbatore. Posters in the ambulance carried the message that the Corporation was responsible for the death of the teacher as it failed to take precautionary measures to prevent outbreak of diseases. Also, the posters said that “without doctors, free deliveries take place on Corporation roads” and blamed the civic body for failing to repair or re-lay the roads after digging works.

When the house began, Mayor S. Soundappan read out a condolence note for the death of a former councillor. The councillors observed two-minute silence. Later, when house whip E. Balasubramaniam was reading the emergency resolutions, DMK councillors entered the house. Immediately Mayor said that all the resolutions were passed and the session has ended. This irked the DMK councillors who raised slogans against the Corporation and also picketed Mayor’s room demanding explanation for ending the session without discussing people’s problem. Addressing the reporters, Opposition leader M. Bhuvaneswari said that there are many issues that need to be addressed. “But before we arrive, Mayor ended the session. This shows that they are in election fear and no work will happen hereafter”, she added. Councillors also said that the Corporation is trying to cover-up the death of teacher who died of flu. “The Corporation should prove that there is no outbreak of dengue it the city”, they added.

Corporation Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj, executive engineers and councillors were present in the meeting that was held for less than three minutes.
