Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate for the Yercaud Assembly seat V. Maran was on Wednesday granted bail in a case related to violation of the model code of conduct. Mr. Maran, who was charged with using more than 10 cars during his election campaign, surrendered before Judicial Magistrate No 6 K. Ambiga.
Based on Vazhapadi Village Administrative Officer P. Ayyanar’s complaint that the candidate had used more than ten vehicles during the campaign on October 22, the police registered a case under Sections 171 (h) (illegal payments in connection with elections) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.
Party district secretary S.R. Sivalingam told reporters that “this is a false case to impede our election campaign as they are afraid of the mass support we receive from the electors.”
Asked about the party’s complaint to the Election Commission about violations and no action being taken, he said they had trust in Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar and that he would conduct elections in a fair manner.
