District administration gears up to prevent dengue

Public places such as government offices, bus stops, colleges, schools and wedding halls where public converge in large numbers should be inspected and kept clean to prevent breeding of mosquitoes which could cause dengue, said Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan.

Addressing a meeting convened with officials of various departments to discuss preventive measures for dengue, Mr. Chavan said that a majority of people continued to store water in underground sumps and water tanks in their homes.

These storage vessels should be closed and disinfected to prevent breeding of mosquitoes. Officials should also carry out inspections to ensure that there is no accumulation of plastic, coconut shells, used tyres and other waste materials which can retain water and facilitate breeding of mosquitoes, Mr. Chavan said.

The Collector said that 148 temporary employees were appointed for carrying out the mosquito eradication programme. An Integrated Disease Prevention Monitoring System has been developed by the health department.

The system would be updated periodically and the data on those admitted in 148 private and government hospitals would be fed then and there. Educational institutions should inform the health department about the students infected with viral fever.

He further said that awareness drives should be carried out by students and officials among the public to educate them on the need for maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in their surroundings to prevent dengue outbreak.

In residential complexes and other buildings which have water tanks, the water should be chlorinated and tanks cleaned properly, he added. Rajaiyan, Joint Director of Medical Services (in charge), M. Madhusoodhanan, Deputy Director of Health Services, Kannan, Dean (in charge), Kanniyakumari Government Medical College Hospital were present.
