Distraint proceedings were initiated against the offices of the Dindigul Collector and the District Revenue Officer on Monday, as the revenue officials did not pay compensation to a person who offered his land for railway broad gauge conversion work in Dindigul-Karur section.
The Sub-Court staff here stated that the revenue officials had acquired three acres of land owned by Kaliappan of Thangachiammapatti near Kovilur for the gauge conversion work. But they delayed settlement of compensation to the landowner.
Acting on a petition filed by Mr. Kaliappan, the Sub-Court directed the revenue department to pay a compensation of ₹31 lakh to him. But the officials did not obey the court order.
After hearing a contempt petition filed subsequently, the court directed the court officials to initiate distraint proceedings against the offices of the Collector and the DRO. The staff came to the Collectorate in the morning to seize vehicles, computers, fans and office furniture in these offices.
The court staff, however, suspended the proceedings as the revenue officials assured them that they would settle the amount due to the petitioner soon.
