“Development should not affect livelihood of people”

Medha Patkar says panchayats are above the Lok Sabha

March 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - THEVARAM:

Development should enhance livelihood of all sections of people and protect environment. Government projects should not destroy the ecology and environment, and prevent livelihood activities of the rural people and tribals, said social activist Medha Patkar.

Addressing a meeting organised by Movement Against Neutrino here on Sunday evening, she said, “We are not against development, science and research, but people have fear over the India-based Neutrino Observatory Project,” she said.

The leaders should realise that the panchayats were above the Lok Sabha and people were above the government. People’s rights over land should be protected.

“We will fight against the INO project in court and also in the street,” she said.

The government should ask the people whether it would be beneficial to them or not.

Addressing the gathering, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko said the agitation against the project would intensify in the coming months. Without agriculture, the district would perish, and the INO project would wipe all irrigation sources in the district, he warned.
