Instead of working on hi-fi technologies that would benefit only the elite, student community should develop new devices with the locally available products for the benefit of larger sections of society, R.S. Sundar, Site Director, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), has said.
Inaugurating a two-day expo, ‘Energising future India’, at Anna University’s Tirunelveli Regional Office on Thursday, Mr. Sundar said that the students’ positive and bold approach towards problems even in challenging situations would turn unfavourable state of affairs in their favour, besides giving them rich experience in dealing with spicy and difficult situations.
While being innovative in every aspect, the students should explore the possibilities of inventing something new with the locally available resources which should benefit larger sections of society instead of helping only the elite, he suggested.
Bridge the gap
Mr. Sundar said that the ever-growing gap between availability and demand in energy sector in the country with 125 crore population could be bridged only through combined approach by generating electricity from both conventional and non-conventional sources.
“Though the share of nuclear energy in the country is only between 3 and 4 per cent now, it will grow phenomenally in the years to come as expansion of existing nuclear power projects and execution of new projects are actively going on,” he said.
Collector M. Karunakaran said that the students should explore the possibilities of tapping energy from all available sources in a sustainable fashion so that country’s growing gap between demand and availability could be bridged.
“The present generation’s tendency to have more comforts and its improved living standards have jointly led to the need for more power and ultimately widened the gap. Hence, the traditional and non-conventional energy sources should be tapped to their optimal level to make the country energy surplus,” said Dr. Karunakaran, who along with Mr. Sundar, inaugurated the expo wherein the students had displayed their inventions.
Dean, Anna University – Tirunelveli Regional Office, G. Sakthinathan said that year-long tireless work of the students had been converted into a new gadget fabricated on the existing principles.
Students from various colleges visited the exhibition, which will be open for the schoolchildren on Friday.
