Government school teachers and headmasters belonging to 20 organisations have decided to stage a demonstration demanding that the suspension of a headmistress and teacher of a government school in Panapakkam be revoked. The Education Department had suspended the duo following the suicide of four students last week.
At the end of a consultative meeting held on Sunday, members of the teachers’ and headmasters’ organisations passed a number of resolutions.
While they condoled the death of the students, the members wanted the Education Department to immediately revoke the suspension of Rama Mani, Headmistress of Government Higher Secondary School, Panapakkam and the class teacher Meenakshi.
Four Class XI students of the school committed suicide by jumping into a well at Ramapuram in Avalur on Friday. Police said their teacher had asked them to bring their parents to school as they did not perform well in academics.
Protest tomorrow
The teachers and headmasters also adopted a resolution demanding the appointment of a counsellor in every government school to provide counselling for students. They urged the government to fulfil their demands, and announced their decision to stage a demonstration on November 29, if the government failed to do so.
