Inordinate delay in sewage treatment plant (STP) work has hit the commissioning of underground drainage (UGD) project in Krishnagiri Municipality.

The project that was earlier slated for completion by March is now scheduled for completion by July end due to the pending STP works. The UGD project for Krishnagiri was commenced in 2010, but the general rocky terrain had posed engineering glitches, followed by contractual delays.

However, the project is currently under the last leg of completion. The UGD project is being implemented at a cumulative cost of Rs.37.32 crore as two packages. Package I of 45-kilometer sewer lines, 1,759 manholes and a main pumping station had long seen completion, while Package II of two STPs is in the last leg of completion.

“There were contractual delays in STP works, and the contractor had to be replaced through fresh tender. STP works are expected to be completed by July end. The project will be commissioned even when one STP gets completed” says Municipal Commissioner Kannan.

The project envisions coverage of 12,000 households across 33 wards of Krishnagiri municipality. As of date, the municipality has given 2,800 household connections.
