At a meeting organised by the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) in New Delhi on Thursday, All India Congress Committee general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad said the government’s decision on a draft resolution in the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva would be guided by India’s decision to support the resolution against Sri Lanka in March 2012. Mr. Azad, who is in-charge of party affairs in Tamil Nadu, said Sri Lanka had “a moral duty to find the truth about the inhuman acts of oppression, sexual assaults and torture of helpless persons, including the family of LTTE leader Prabakaran.”
His remarks came shortly after journalists left the venue, but details of his speech are available with The Hindu . Besides Mr. Azad, three Congress MPs attended the meeting.
Mr. Azad said the Sri Lankan government “owes to its own people and to the world the appointment of an independent inquiry into violation of human rights and punish those who are responsible for such violation.”
