Death of biker: Action taken against constable

A police constable attached to Hasthampatti police station was transferred to the City Armed Reserve after a motorist at whom he hurled a lathi during a vehicle check rammed his two-wheeler on an electric post and died recently. The constable had thrown the lathi as the motorist sped past despite being flagged down by the police to stop the vehicle.

Police had earlier claimed that on July 17, S. Venkatraj (25) of Veeranam hit a speed-breaker on Maravaneri and sustained head injuries. The police took him to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital, where doctors had declared him brought dead.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, a motorist who claimed to have witnessed the incident, chose to speak up on the issue.
