THOOTHUKUDI

Dead fishes were washed ashore for a stretch of two km from Kovalam near here since Sunday evening.

Alerted by the local people, officials of the Department of Fisheries and Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) here visited the coast and collected the dead fishes.

Sources said the dead fishes would be sent to Fisheries College and Research Institute to ascertain the exact reason for their mysterious death. The CMFRI would also analyse the dead fishes, they said.

Fishermen and the villagers allege that toxic effluents being discharged into the sea by a chemical fertilizer manufacturing unit caused the death of the fishes.

Collector N. Venkatesh said appropriate action would be taken based on the findings of the analysis by the CMFRI and Fisheries College and Research Institute.
