CWC intensifies probe in Anjetti baby 'transfer'

Placing the two newborn babies under temporary care of the government adoption home, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) is on the lookout for precedents to legalise the adoption of Rama’s daughter.

Speaking to The Hindu , L. Vincent Sundararaj, Chairperson and Judicial Magistrate under the The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, said the CWC was exploring a precedent given by the Madras High Court in a similar case in Salem.

“The court had taken a humanitarian stand as the child was already under the care of foster parents for over two years. However, this will be solely keeping in mind the welfare of the child as mandated by the Act,” he said.

“But, the CWC cannot condone illegal adoptions, and here efforts may be made to legalise the adoption of the two-year-old keeping the child’s best interest in mind, since she’s become attached to her foster family,” said Mr. Sundararaj.

After day-long depositions to the child protection officer M.Sivagandhi here on Tuesday, Pachiammal and Selathammal suddenly wanted their babies back. But the CWC rejected their claim.
