August 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 04:58 pm IST - NAGERCOIL:

The container carrying new currency notes from the Bank Note Press in Nanjangud near Mysuru in Karnataka to the Reserve Bank of India in Thiruvananthapuram overturned near Nagercoil on Friday. The new currency notes were neatly packed in over 200 safety boxes and kept inside the specially made container.

As the container could not be recovered along with the currency notes due to heavy weight, the officials rushed from Reserve Bank of India in Thiruvananthapuram and decided to shift the boxes into three small container lorries during midnight.

The container lorries were brought from Thiruvananthapuram after midnight and the cash boxes numbering over 200 were shifted to these lorries amidst tight security.

As the news spread like wildfire in the surrounding villages, curious villagers thronged the place to catch a glimpse of the currency notes.

As soon as the accident took place, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel escorting the container from Mysore surrounded the container. The local police and additional CISF force from ISRO’s Mahendragiri were summoned to the spot for additional security cover.

Transferring cash boxes from the overturned container to three small containers started around midnight and ended early in the morning.

Local police extended logistic support including arranging floodlights around the container with the help of a powerful generator till Saturday morning.

After the cash boxes were shifted to three small container lorries under the direct supervision of the RBI officials, the lorries proceeded to Thiruvananthapuram escorted by the CISF personnel at around 6.45 a.m. police sources here said.
