Vegetables, herbs and spices in riotous colours were peeping out of cartons and trays. The tables were in order. And, when the time came, participants of this year’s Masterchef Riviera 2.0 who were all set to make on-the-go-snacks, clamoured to get their fill of ingredients on the third day of Riviera, 2014, a sports and cultural fest organised by VIT University.
Sujesh Mandal, one of the participants was gearing up in a corner to make bread pizza. “This is my first time and I am here because I love cooking,” he said. While Saturday’s round covered snacks, Sunday’s competition will see participants experimenting with desserts in an open-air venue. Teesta Mukherjee, member of VIT’s Culinary Club that is organising the competition said participants had submitted their recipes along with the list of ingredients. Close to 194 registrations were recieved for the event.
At the short film-making workshop, which was being conducted by student and short-film maker Anil Kumar P. participants got a glimpse into the basics of video editing. At the workshop, organised by the Indian Society for Technical Education, VIT University students’ chapter, participants were clued in on how he made use of chroma keying in one of his upcoming projects. At the graffiti workshop ‘Beyond the Wall,’ too, being an artist was no prerequisite. Pristine white flexes were hung in rows like on a clothesline, only to be sprayed, painted and stencilled with a burst of colours and patterns. Another corner of the campus that attracted a lot of visitors was the go-karting track. Umesh Bodhwani, student co-ordinator, said they had as many as 400 registrations as of Saturday, other then spot registrations. The third day also saw events such as ‘Human Foosball’, ‘Prison Break’, ‘Facebook Portfolio Shoot’, and ‘Raaga Reggae.’
As the evening set in, VIT Chennai’s ‘Black Pearl’ and SASTRA University battled it out in the finals of the thematic round of Frisk Factor, a dance competition. IIT-Madras, SASTRA University, NIT Trichy, VIT Chennai Exemius and SSN College of Engineering competed in the non-thematic round which was judged by Sobhita Dhulipala, Miss India Earth, 2013, and dancer Raghavan. One of the most anticipated events of the day, however, was the performance by the renowned band Pentagram, which was set to perform late on Saturday evening. The Hindu is the media partner for Riviera 2014.
