The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Southern Circle, K.J.S. Naidu, has cleared the newly laid 150-km broad gauge (BG) track between Vellore Cantonment and Villupuram stations for operation of passenger trains.
The letter giving clearance was received at the Southern Railway headquarters on Tuesday, according to R. Ramanathan, Chief Administrative Officer of the Southern Railway.
After carrying out a three-day inspection of the track from March 3 to 5, the CRS had said that passenger trains could be operated after rectifying some minor defects. Mr. Ramanathan told The Hindu over phone on Wednesday that the CRS has asked the railway officials to operate passenger trains initially at a speed of 50 km per hour.
