Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli, has established a hatchery to supply country chicks to farmers.
In a statement, Dean S. Pratabhan said intensive country chicken farming for meat and egg had become a lucrative venture in the southern districts due to increased demand. Though day-old chicks were essential for profitable country chicken farming, the southern districts did not have proper sources of this input. Hence, the farmers were dependant on Namakkal, Coimbatore and Tirupur.
A poultry hatchery had been started at the VC and RI, Tirunelveli, on an outlay of Rs. 35 lakh to supply day-old chicks to the farmers at a nominal cost and to advise them on profitable country chicken farming methods.
The hatchery would supply day-old chicks every week to the farmers, for which they had to pay in advance.
