A meeting of members of Contract Workers Union, who carry out repair works along electricity supply lines in the district, has decided to stage agitation and also move legally to get them inducted as permanent employees in Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation.

A. Saravanan, secretary of the Union, said 110 persons, who carry out electricity supply line works, would observe a fast in December and also press for compensation to the families of those workers who were killed while doing works in the district.

However, TANGEDCO officials have already clarified that the organisation had not deployed any person to maintenance or repair works on supply lines on contract.

It had been giving only ‘work contracts’ for erection of posts and line extension works which was accorded after floating tenders, the officials said.

The Union members countered that saying workers were in reality been deployed on wages and the officials were now stating only rules from the book.
