Criticising Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for her statement that there was a conspiracy behind the power crisis in Tamil Nadu, Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said on Saturday that the question was whether or not the State had adequate power.
Terming the conspiracy theory a “new story” floated by the Chief Minister, Mr. Chidambaram said it stemmed from her ignorance. He asked where the question of a conspiracy was. The Electricity Minister and officials were all in her government. There could be only one question: whether there was adequate power or not.
The reply was in the negative. The Chief Minister was worried about the power situation in the State, which witnessed cuts for long hours. She did not keep her promise to improve the power situation.
She gave an assurance that power cuts would go in six months, and the State would become power surplus. It was sweet to hear this, but it did not materialise, he said.
Addressing a public meeting at Pushpa Nagar here to canvas votes for Congress candidates for Central and South Chennai C.D. Meiyappan and S.V. Ramani, Mr. Chidambaram said the Congress alone could ensure a stable government for five years.
Past events showed that even those leaders who were former Congressmen and became Prime Minister could not run the government for a full term. Various laws, especially the latest ones, would get implemented only if the party came back to power.
