“Conspiracy led to the defeat of DMK”

Karunanidhi thanks Tiruvarur voters

July 07, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - TIRUVARUR:

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M.Karunanidhi on Tuesday accused the ruling AIADMK and the Union Government of having conspired to defeat the DMK in the recent Assembly elections.

Addressing a thanksgiving meeting here, he claimed the AIADMK had won with the tacit support of the Centre and the Election Commission.

While he did not adduce any substantive reasons in support of his claim, he wondered why Prime Minister Narendra Modi had hurriedly congratulated AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa midway through the counting of votes.

Mr.Karunanidhi wondered: “what does this mean?” It means that they had hatched a conspiracy, he charged.

He also criticised the Election Commission and alleged that the commission did not act honestly and favoured the AIADMK.

“They wanted to defeat the DMK by all means as a victory for us would mean the rise of the Dravidian movement and Dravidians,” he alleged.

“The difference in vote share between the AIADMK and DMK was only 1.1 per cent. We were not defeated. We were only denied a victory,” he reiterated.

He urged the party cadre not to feel dejected but work tirelessly for victory in future. The DMK cannot be vanquished by any force and the movement, nurtured by Periyar and Anna, was marching ahead strongly, he maintained.

“The electoral setback was only a stepping stone for victory. The DMK will return to power in the next few years or even months,” he affirmed. Referring to the seizure of Rs.570 crore while the money was being transported in containers at Tirupur during the elections, he hoped that the directive of the High Court to the CBI to inquire into it would help bring out the truth and uphold justice. In a nearly 25-minute speech, Mr.Karunanidhi thanked those who had voted for the party. Earlier in the day, a kaviarangam and a pattimandram were organised as part of Mr.Karunanidhi’s birthday celebration.
