The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee on Wednesday organised a meeting of its district committee presidents, wherein questions were raised about the party’s alliance with the DMK.

Sources said that South Chennai district president ‘Karate’ R. Thiagarajan was the only district president to make his reservations on the DMK alliance public. Another senior leader, who is no longer an office-bearer, also reportedly questioned the Congress’ alliance, saying that the party should keep its options open.

Sources said that Mr. Thiagarajan referred to the emergence of T.T.V. Dhinakaran and Rajinikanth in the State’s political landscape and made the point that the Congress should use them for better terms in its relationship with the DMK. He was reportedly angry with the “big brother” treatment meted out by DMK’s district secretaries. “I felt that he was hinting that we should explore the possibilities of an alliance with Mr. Dhinakaran or Rajinikanth. He was confident that Rajini will not move close to the BJP,” a senior leader told The Hindu .

The meeting was the first major event for the party after the central leadership’s communique that said that all pradesh congress presidents were to continue in their positions till further orders. Supporters of the TNCC president have taken the statement to mean that Su. Thirunavukkarasar has been reappointed. One of the 15 resolutions passed at the end of the meeting thanked AICC president Rahul Gandhi for ‘reappointing’ Mr. Thirunavukkarasar, who was felicitated by the DCC presidents.
