Congress meet in Chennai likely to be stormy

It comes in the backdrop of a war of words between supporters of Vasan and Chidambaram

For the first time after its debacle in the Lok Sabha polls, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) will have a brainstorming session here on Saturday, with office-bearers of different factions expected to trade charges while analysing the cause of the defeat.

The meeting comes in the backdrop of a war of words between the supporters of the former Union Ministers, G.K. Vasan and P. Chidambaram, who last week issued statements, holding each other responsible for the defeat.

Key issues

A few office-bearers, who spoke to  The Hindu,  said they decided to raise some key issues.

Topping the chart would be lack of effort on the part of district functionaries during the campaign.

Graft charges

“There are also allegations of corruption making the rounds. I will insist that action be taken on those who failed to work for the party during the campaign,” said a candidate who contested from a constituency in south Tamil Nadu.

Another candidate, who wished not to be named, said he had already written to the party high command, including president Sonia Gandhi, on the lack of representation for certain key communities in the party ranks.

“There is a feeling on the ground that the Congress was not accommodating these communities, who have a large vote share in a few regions of the State,” the leader said.

While TNCC president B.S. Gnanadesikan is expected to stress the need for unity in the party to strengthen its organisation, there is a question mark on whether office-bearers loyal to Mr. Chidambaram would attend the meeting.
