The statements made by the State Congress unit chief E.V.K.S. Elangovan against Chief Minister Jayalalithaa came in for sharp criticism at the District Panchayat Council meeting held here on Wednesday.

Manikandan (AIADMK) said that Mr. Elangovan has been repeatedly making false statements to defame the Chief Minister. He was also making unsavoury statements against ‘Edappadi’ K. Palaniswami, PWD and State Highways Minister, who was instrumental in bringing many development and welfare schemes for the district.

The District Panchayat Council had already adopted a resolution against Mr. Elangovan condemning his behaviour in the past. He continues to behave in an irresponsible manner. He pleaded with the council to once again adopt a resolution condemning Mr. Elangovan.

The Councillors should also stage a demonstrate against him, he said.

Mr. Manikandan pleaded with the State Government for free power supply to the mosquito net manufacturing units and all small industrial units.

Srinivasan (AIADMK) said that protected drinking water was not supplied in Selathanpatti panchayat adjoining the city and this has caused much hardship to the local residents. He pleaded for the construction of a separate sump for the distribution of potable water to this panchayat. In this connection, he said G. Venkatachalam, MLA of Salem West constituency, has already come forward to get adequate finance for the construction of the sump.

S. Satish Kumar, president of the District Panchayat Council, promised to take steps for solving drinking water problem across the district.

After the meeting concluded, Mr. Manikandan urged the ruling party Councillors to come forward to stage demonstration against Mr. Elangovan. However, other councillors pacified him stating that they could hold agitation after consulting the Minister Edappadi Palaniswami.
