Congress cadre on Thursday petitioned Corporation Commissioner M. Seeni Ajmalkhan demanding steps for supplying drinking water after removal of contamination caused by untreated industrial effluent and sewerage discharge.

Congress urban unit president E.P. Ravi in a petition urging accordance of functional status for the sewerage treatment plant at Vairapalayam to re-cycle polluted water flowing in Pitchakaranpallam Odai and for proper use of the nine-acre dump yard there.

The land was purchased for dumping garbage when Verrappanchathiram was a municipality. The dumping of garbage along the embankment of Cauvery River was detrimental to hygiene since water was being pumped for drinking purpose close by.

Likewise, the Sewerage Treatment Plant at Vairapalayam to clean up polluted water flowing through the Pitchakaranpallam Odai was established as a joint project by erstwhile municipalities of Veerappanchathiram, Periyasemur and Surampatti. The STP could not be used since there was no consensus on which local body would pay the electricity charges. Now that the municipalities have been subsumed by Corporation, the facility must be optimally utilised forthwith to lessen impact of pollution of drinking water, Mr. Ravi said.
