All India Farmers’ Association (AIFA) will organise a conference on Land Acquisition Bill and farmers rights on lands in Dindigul on May 24, in which farmers from eight districts will participate, according to A. Vijaya Murugan, State secretary of the association.
A decision to this effect was taken at the meeting of functionaries of eight southern districts farmers’ associations here on Saturday.
He said farmers from Dindigul, Madurai, Theni, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchi and Karur districts would participate in the May 24 conference, and All India general secretary Hannan Mullah would preside.
The conference would highlight ill-effects of the Bill and the Centre’s “anti-farmers policies,”, and a signature campaign against the Bill would be held and the signatures collected from farmers would be sent to the President.
Mr. Murugan also demanded that the Centre offer loans to farmers at four per cent interest and abandon the proposal to raise the interest for agricultural loans to 11 per cent from seven per cent.
