Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Saturday said that his government was determined to cross all hurdles in implementing three pet schemes — free distribution of rice, disbursement of pension and reimbursement of fees remitted by students admitted in professional colleges under the Centralised Admission Committee quota.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting he had with senior officials, he said the three schemes were part of the election manifesto and the government was committed to implement the programmes.
The meeting with officials, he said, was to get a feedback about the financial requirements and ongoing schemes for presentation in the meeting convened by NITI Aayog in New Delhi on Sunday.
The Chief Minister said his government had spent 95 per cent of the funds earmarked for the last financial year.
Mr. Narayanasamy said he would try to prevail upon the Centre to waive the loan the Union Territory had taken before a separate account was opened for it.
The Chief Minister also held a meeting with police officers at the Police Training College, Gorimedu.
He urged the police to do everything to maintain law and order as a tranquil environment was necessary to promote tourism and industrial development.
The Chief Minister said the government was making efforts to promote tourism and bring investment. For this, he said, it was important to maintain peace.
The Chief Minister directed police to keep a vigil in the rural areas to check the activities of anti-social elements.
Later in the day, the Chief Minister left for New Delhi to attend the NITI Aayog meeting.
