Functioning of a Combined Water Supply Scheme covering major towns and several habitations was reviewed by State Environment Minister Thoppu N.D. Venkatachalam, District Collector S. Prabakar, and other senior officials.

The Rs. 19.26 crore scheme implemented by the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board covers Chennimalai, K.C. Palayam, Perundurai, Chittode, and Nasinyanur Town Panchayats at 70 lpcd (Litres Per Capita Per Day) and 69 other habitations in Erode, Perundurai and Chennimalai unions at the level of 40 lpcd.

The project was sanctioned during 2004-05.

The scheme will cater to intermediate population of 1,47,907 during 2021, and ultimate population of 2,15,975 during 2036, providing 13.39 MLD (Millions of Litres per Day) for intermediate population and 19.38 MLD for ultimate population.

According to a TWAD press release, surface water in River Cauvery is sourced for the scheme for which two collection wells of six metres diameter have been dug up. The treatment plant at Konavaikkal features six Rapid Sand Filter Beds: two of size 2.45 x 3.40 metres each and four of 6 x 4.50 metres each.

From there, water is pumped to Gangapuram booster, and from there to Vavikadai booster, K.C. Palayam Sump, Perundurai, MPN Colony, Melapalayam, Poonga Nagar and Velliampalayam. From the group sumps, water will be lifted to the overhead tanks constructed in the habitations, the release said.
