Collector M. Karunakaran has ordered the demolition of ongoing illegal constructions at picturesque Maekkarai village on the foothills of Western Ghats.
After the agriculturists’ raised this serious issue during the farmers’ grievance day meet held at the Collectorate on last Friday, Dr. Karunakaran promised them of appropriate and immediate action. Keeping his promise, the Collector deputed a special team to survey the ongoing constructions at the first street of Maekkarai village.
The inspection team found that an individual was constructing a building on a land owned by Thiruvavaduthurai Mutt without getting any permission from Achchanputhur Town Panchayat.
Based on this report, Dr. Karunakaran on Tuesday ordered the demolition of these illegal constructions within seven days.
Farmer S.T. Shaik Maideen of nearby Vadakarai alleged that the ongoing illegal construction had changed the course of Yerumaichaadi River in a bid to create waterfalls in the jungle close to the building since it would attract a good number of tourists during rainy seasons. “Similar constructions have been made in three more places near Maekkarai which should also go,” Mr. Shaik Maideen said.
