Coconut fibre unit destroyed in fire

A coconut fibre making unit, owned by Chandrasekaran (50), in Thamaraikutti area near Aathikattuvilai in Kanniyakumari district was gutted in a fire in the early hours of Sunday.

According to sources, the fire, which broke out in the unit around 2.30 a.m., was noticed by the neighbours.

They immediately alerted Fire and Rescue Services personnel. Fire tenders from Nagercoil and other towns were rushed to the spot around 3 a.m.

Seven-hour struggle

But the fire could be extinguished only after a seven-hour struggle.

A team of fire fighters, led by Sathyakumar, Station Officer, Nagercoil Fire Station, put out the fire.

Huge loss

Hundreds of bundles of fibre stocked in the unit and equipment worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed in the fire, but the loss could not be ascertained immediately.
