Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cadres, led by district president T. A. Tirumalai Balaji, were detained by the police on Friday as they proceeded towards central bus stand to picket a Tasmac-run IMFL retail outlet.

Earlier, they staged a demonstration in front of the corporation office, seeking total prohibition in the State. Mr. Balaji, who addressed the cadres, urged the State government to enforce prohibition as consumption of liquor was the prime reason for law and order problems.

The government should take immediate action to enforce total prohibition in people’s interest, he said.

Tirunelveli

As many 418 cadres including 73 women from Bharatiya Janata Party courted arrest in various parts of Tirunelveli district on Friday while they attempted to lock TASMAC, seeking to implement total prohibition in the State.

Agitations demanding closure of TASMAC shops were held at 23 locations apart from Tirunelveli City, where agitations were organised at Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli Town, Junction and at Melapalayam, police sources also said.

The arrested cadres were released later.

Nagercoil

As many as 28 cadres and leaders of BJP were arrested for staging a demonstration in front of the Tasmac shop in Eraniel in Kanyakumari district on Friday.

As part of the State-wide agitation demanding total prohibition, agitations were held by BJP cadres in twelve places in Kanyakumari district.

Other places where demonstrations were held include Periyavilai junction, Aralvoimozhi panchayat office, Azhagiyamandapam, Kulasekaram market, Arumanai junction, Gandhi Maidan in Marthandam, Colachel Bus stand, Karunal Auto Stand, Monday Market, Pudukkadai junction and Mayiladi, the sources said.
