Thanks to appreciable scale of public contribution, Gobichettipalayam Municipality has initiated measures to clean up the ‘Teppakulam’ along the Hanumantharaya Street.
Pollution
The water body on 36 cents that was once a spot of religious significance where people used to have their bath and conduct puja got degenerated into a spot of acute pollution over the decades.
The water body is poised to gain back its old form what with the public contributing Rs. 15 lakh for its revival as fresh water source under the leadership K.A. Sengottaiyan, MLA.
Earlier this month, members of the Tank Revival Committee handed over a cheque for Rs. 15.15 lakh to the District Collector S. Prabakaran in the presence of Gobichettipalayam Municipality Commissioner G. Dhanalakshmi
Dewatering of the tank, and its beautification would be carried out under the State Government's Self-Sufficiency Scheme. More importantly, the tank, after its transformation, would signify the essence of rainwater harvesting, Ms. Dhanalakshmi said.
People residing in the neighbourhood of the Teppakulam are a happy lot since dewatering of the water body and reviving it with fresh water would mean purification of the groundwater.
