On the first day of the class X public examination on Friday, some questions in the Tamil paper took the students by surprise.
With the State planning to revise the syllabus from next year there was much apprehension about the way the question papers would be framed. Nabeela N., who wrote the examination at Santhome, said she was taken aback as a few questions were tricky. “But after a few minutes of reading, I knew what the answer was. The rest of the paper was quite easy,” she said.
At a centre in Mylapore, Sukanya Duraiswamy, a private candidate, said the paper was easy. “I was anxious since it was the first exam but as I was well-prepared it was easy. I found many of the expected questions in the paper,” she said.
P.K. Ilamaran, State president of Tamil Nadu Teachers Association, said questions for about 25 marks were quite indirect. “This doesn't mean the questions were out of syllabus. If teachers had taught them well, the students would have understood them. The paper was definitely an easy one,” he added. Students said they were nervous about facing Mathematics examination on April 10.
Around 9,64,491 students from 12,337 schools are appearing for the Class X public exams and 36,649 are appearing as private candidates. Apart from this, 186 prisoners are taking the exam from the centres established in four prisons, including Puzhal in Chennai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore and Palayamkottai. A total of 6,900 flying and standing squads have been deployed to check copying.
