two-member committee constituted by the Green Bench of the Supreme Court will inspect the location at Anavaachal in the catchment of Periyar dam identified by Kerala Forest Department to set up a car park on Monday, according to PWD sources.

The committee members, P.S. Somashekar, Inspector-General of Forests, and Swarna Subba Rao, Surveyor General of India, will inspect and assess whether the chosen area was within the catchment of Periyar dam or not.

The spot was far off from the dam site. But when the level of the dam was raised to 152 feet, the site would be under water stagnation zone, argued Tamil Nadu officials.

When the Kerala forest officials indentified two and a half acres at Anavaachal for the car park, Tamil Nadu PWD officials approached the Green Bench seeking a ban as the site was under the leased area.

The Bench constituted the two-member committee, advised it to inspect the spot by March-end and submit a report to it.

‘The spot was far off from the dam site. But when water level is raised to 152 feet, the site would be under water stagnation zone.’
