A team of officials from CB - CID, Karnataka, began their probe into the death of A. Palani (45) of Chettipatti village in Kolathur block, who was allegedly killed in a shoot-out by Karnataka forest officials on October 21 last year.
It is said that Palani along with M. Raja (42) of Govindapadi and Muthusamy of Nettakalkottai sneaked into the Gobinatham Forest Range in M.M. Hills in Karnataka for hunting. Forest officials opened fire on the three. But on October 24, the body of Palani was found floating with injuries at Adipalaru in Cauvery in Karnataka.
This sparked tension in the border villages as relatives torched the Forest Department check post in Palar in Karnataka and took away five guns.
Based on a complaint from Palani’s wife Santha, the M.M. Hills police registered a case. However, she filed a petition in the Madras High Court demanding CB-CID probe into the incident.
On Tuesday, a team led by DSP Jayakumar from Karnataka and officials inspected the check post and held inquiries with personnel present on duty on October 24. The team also visited the Kolathur police station and held inquiries with Santha and Raja. Sources said that the team would continue their investigation and would submit the report to the Madras High Court.
The family members and relatives were demanding compensation and action against the forest officials responsible for death of Palani.
