The CB-CID, which is investigating cases of fake and expired drugs in the State, is functioning impartially, Director General of Police Letika Saran has said.
After AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa sought transfer of these cases to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the DGP issued a statement detailing raids undertaken by the police from November last year till this May.
The State Drugs Control Director ordered raids in a few parts of the State on receiving information that some medical shops were selling fake Primoult-N tablets. Subsequently, the Kodungaiyur police unearthed a fake drug scam in Chennai.
After the Chief Minister asked health and police officials to take punitive action against fake drug dealers in March, the police seized expired drugs and booked cases, Ms. Letika Saran said. All the cases were transferred to the CB-CID as they needed focussed investigation in several places, including neighbouring States.
In all, 34 persons had been arrested in the fake and expired drugs cases till now. Six persons had surrendered before courts. Already 14 persons had been booked under the Goondas Act and the police were making efforts, through courts, to destroy the Rs.2-crore worth of fake drugs seized.
The CB-CID were still conducting raids gathering information on suppliers in the fake drug network to arrest them.
